German Short Film Award for POLAR

WE ARE HAPPY AND EXCITED!

Polar received the German Short Film Award in gold, contributed by BKM, Ministry for Culture and Media. The Jury consisted of Frank Becher – producer, Andrea Hohnen – program manager First Steps, Stefan Kornatz – author/director, Anke Lindenkamp – commissioning editor for short films at ZDF / ARTE and Alexandra Gramatke, CEO Kurzfilmagentur Hamburg.

POLAR nominated for the German Short Film Award

The Film Award in Gold will be conferred by Staatsminister Bernd Neumann in Ludwigsburg on October 29th.

Extract from the Jury's statement (available in German only):

"An dem leisen Film über die Sehnsucht nach Nähe und die Schwierigkeit, sie zu erlangen, hat uns alles überzeugt: die sparsamen Dialoge - kein Wort zu viel -, die subtile Schauspielführung - keine überflüssige Geste - und eine insgesamt reduzierte Erzählweise, die vieles aus- und offenlässt, damit aber umso mehr Raum für feine und mehrdeutige Zwischentöne schafft. Die souveräne Kamera bleibt konsequent bei den Figuren und setzt die karge Landschaft so ins Bild, dass sie deren Seelenzustände zu reflektieren scheint. Reduktion auf allen Ebenen also. Herausgekommen ist ein Film von großer atmosphärischer Dichte, der tief berührt, ohne im Geringsten sentimental zu sein."

POLAR will be screened at the 25. Warsaw Film Festival (09.-18.10.2009) as part of the short film competiion, in the student film competition at the 39. Molodist Festival Kyiv (24.10.-01.11.2009) and in the competition of the 39. Alcine, Festival de Cine Alcalá de Henares (06.-14.11.2009)

Nomination for Babelsberger Medienpreis

POLAR is nominated for the Sponsorship Award for the Best Diploma Film - Fiction. The Award is donated by the GWFF (Gesellschaft zur Wahrnehmung von Film- und Fernsehrechten mbH) and will be awarded on Oct 9 in Potsdam-Babelsberg.

POLAR will be screened at the 25th edition of the International Short Film Fest Hamburg, 02.-08.06.2009, as part of the German Competition.

POLAR awarded at Dresden and Altkirch

At the International Short Film Festival Dresden, held from 14.-19.04.2009, POLAR was awarded the Golden Horseman of the National Competition for Short Fiction Films and at the 8. Festival du Court Métrage in Altkirch, Alsace 14.-19.04.2009, the film won the Grand Prix.

POLAR invited to Oberhausen, Vienna and Wiesbaden

The 55th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, held from 30.04.-05.05.2009, invited POLAR to take part in the NRW-Competition 2009. POLAR will also be screened at the opening ceremony of the Vienna Short Film Festival, 14-20.05.2009, and the 29th Workshop for Young Filmmakers in Wiesbaden, 29.05.-01.06.2009.

POLAR invited to KINO! New Films from Germany at the Museum of Modern Art, New York

As part of a German short film programme POLAR will be presented at KINO! New Films from Germany - the 30th annual survey of recent German films at the MOMA in New York.

POLAR selected to be part of the programme "Soiree Allemand: Coup de Cœur Le Court Métrage Allemand 2009 in Clermont Ferrand"

The screening during the International Short Film Fest at Clermont Ferrand was the kick-off for the world tour through numerous French-speaking countries and territories. In the upcoming months the programme will be presented within the network of the Goethe-Institut in over 30 cities worldwide.

Berlinale 2009: POLAR receives special mention

POLAR receives a special mention from the German-French jury of "Dialogue en Perspective" at the 59th Berlinale. The jury's statement: The fragility expressed in POLAR makes the film remarkable. POLAR is a gentle and subtle film with casually narrated poetic moments with lasting effects. The film attests to a promising film directing talent.

POLAR will celebrate its German Premiere during the 59th Berlinale in the section Perspektive Deutsches Kino.

Best Swiss Short Film Award for POLAR

At the film's world premiere at the International Film Festival Winterthur 2008 Michael Koch received the award for the Best Swiss Short Film for POLAR. The award was shared with SECOND ME by Anna Thommen. The jury's statement: A serious subject matter combined with a powerful and direct narrative approach make this story about a young man and his father stand out. The clash between the two characters is fittingly set against a backdrop of a bleak alpine no man's land.

Broadcasting of DER ERNST DES SPIELS

DER ERNST DES SPIELS will be broadcast for the first time at ZDF as part of the FREMDE KINDER slot at 6:00 pm on November 23, 2008 and again at ZDF Doku Kanal on January 29, 2009 at 10:10 pm.

7 1/2 FRAUEN wins award at I'VE SEEN FILMs in Milan

7 1/2 FRAUEN is the winner of the CortoWeb Award for the Best Experimental Short Film at the I'VE SEEN FILMS - INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL in Milan. Amongst others, the Jury consisted of Richard Gere, Robert Rodriguez, Ridley Scott and Paul Verhoeven.

POLAR Wraps Shooting

The Swiss-German amalgamation ended succesfully after 12 days of shooting in sun, fog and rain. POLAR is now moving to the editing room.

In addition to the participation of SF 1 (Swiss Television), the Filmstiftung NRW, the Filmstiftung Zurich and the Expert Committee Audiovision and Multimedia Basel are set to support the production of Michael Koch's diploma project POLAR.

Armin Franzen Nominated for the German Camera Award/ Deutscher Kamerapreis 2007

Armin Franzen has been nominated in two categories for the German Camera Award/ Deutscher Kamerapreis for his work as DoP on the shortfilm AMIN. The nominations include the categories "Shortfilm" and "Support Grant – Shortfilm". The award ceremony of the 17. Deutscher Kamerapreis will be held on June 17 in Cologne.

Post-Production Support for AMIN

The Film Fund "Île-de-France" (Fond de Soutien aux Industries Techniques Cinématographiques et Audiovisuelles de la Région Île-de-France) supports the post-production of the shortfilm AMIN.

The grant will help to accomplish the last steps of the post-production. Due to this support AMIN will be soon available on a 35 mm print.

AMIN Awarded with the PRIX UIP Rotterdam at the IFFR

The jury's statement:

“Fifteen very different short films were nominated for the Prix UIP at the 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam. Out of those fifteen the jury ultimately chose a film in which intimate camerawork and precise editing are combined to create an atmosphere that shifts fluently from naive child’s play into uncomfortable realism. The winner of the Prix UIP is AMIN, directed by David Dusa (France/Germany/The Netherlands).”
